News Synopsis

According to a source familiar with the situation who spoke to The Information, TikTok creators may soon be able to charge viewers $1 or more to watch their videos. According to The Information's reporting, the paywall is only one of several features TikTok may add to its platform in an attempt to attract more users.

In addition to the paywall, insiders informed The Information that TikTok is working on the Creator Fund 2.0, an upgraded version of the Creator Fund it first announced in 2020. This fund will compensate creators with more than 100,000 followers in an effort to keep them on the platform. The new fund might begin operations as early as March, one source told the publication.

The company also hopes to increase the number of its older users. According to a 2021 Pew Research research, only 21% of US adults use TikTok, whereas 67% of US youths do, per a 2022 Pew Survey study. According to current and former employees who spoke to The Information, the app seeks to attract that older audience by introducing professionally produced content, such as polished videos as opposed to amateurish ones recorded on smartphones.

A TikTok spokesperson told Insider that "We're committed to exploring new ways to create a valuable and rewarding experience for the TikTok creator community," a TikTok spokesperson told, though they declined to comment on the specific features.

"On TikTok, anyone can be a creator and everyone can enjoy entertainment from our inspiring creators, and we aim to continue innovating this experience so people can express themselves, find their community, and be rewarded for their creativity,"

These actions follow TikTok cutting its global ad revenue target by about $2 billion last November in reaction to declining sales, and the app suffered a dip in its user base all of last year, according to The Information.

Although the company does not intend to lay off workers, The Information reports that CEO Shou Zi Chew and Chief Operating Officer Vanessa Pappas said as much during last week's all-hands meeting. However, the company does anticipate a slowdown in hiring, and Insider reported last month that the company had let members of its hiring team go.

The new features will complement the platform's existing rewards for creators, which already include a marketplace where they can meet brands for sponsorship opportunities and tools that let them collect tips and gain paying viewers for their live streams.

The difficulty TikTok is having luring in new users stands in stark contrast to the tremendous rise it had during the pandemic.

It has taken TikTok only a short while to become a worldwide phenomenon. According to Intelligence, the number of users of the app increased significantly between 2019 and 2021, rising from 291.4 million to 655.9 million. The app stated that it would have 1 billion monthly users by the end of 2021. However, according to The Information, TikTok's adult user base in the US reached a plateau in early 2022.
