News Synopsis

At a press conference on Thursday, Union Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari informed that the government has made it mandatory for all automobile makers to equip all passenger cars with three-point seat belts. In a statement made yesterday, Union Transport Minister and Highways Minister said: "I have signed a file yesterday to make it mandatory for automakers to provide three-point seat belts for all the front-facing passengers in a car”. This move came to reduce the number of road accident fatalities. Every year almost 1.5 lakh people die in road accidents. Presently the middle seat of the rear row doesn't come with a three-point seat belt. It has a two-point or a lap seatbelt commonly found in airplanes. Replacing this with a three-point seat belt will certainly be effective in bringing down the number of lives lost in road accidents every year.
