News Synopsis

Microsoft has recently announced its decision to discontinue support for Android applications on Windows 11. This comes after a two-year period during which users were able to access and install Android apps through the Windows 11 Amazon Appstore.

Introduced in 2021, the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) provided users with the ability to seamlessly run Android applications on their Windows 11 devices.

However, as part of Microsoft's evolving strategy and focus on other features, the WSA will be removed from the feature set of Windows 11 by 2025.

This decision reflects a shift in priorities for Microsoft and signals the end of an era for Android app support on the Windows platform.

The modification in the Amazon App Store

After Apple incorporated iOS applications into their new M-series MacBooks and Google added support for Android apps on Chromebooks, Microsoft decided to use a similar approach for Windows 11 users, allowing them to install Android apps on their laptops through the Amazon App Store.

Transition Schedule

There is a one-year grace period for current Amazon App Store customers to keep using the loaded apps and get updates until March 25, 2024. On March 7, 2024, however, new users won't be able to look for the Amazon App Store or related apps.

Working Together with Amazon to Provide a Smooth Transition

Microsoft is working with Amazon to make sure that users and developers of Android apps on Windows 11 have a seamless transition. Amazon has pledged to stop

the beginning of March 5, 2024, for the addition of new apps to the Amazon App Store. Updates for apps already in existence can be submitted by developers until March 25, 2024, at which point the Amazon App Store and WSA will both be completely shut down.

What Caused the Change?

As Microsoft's answer to Chromebooks and M-series MacBooks, the Amazon App Store does not offer the same direct access to Android apps as the Play Store. This disparity in user experience, together with Microsoft's increased emphasis on AI capabilities and Copilot updates, probably had a role in the decision to stop supporting Android applications on Windows 11.

What Takes Place With Current Users?

Users may keep using their Android applications downloaded from the Amazon App Store till March 2025. After that date, though, there won't be any more upgrades or new apps accessible.
