News Synopsis

Last night, the President of Sri Lanka. Gotabaya Rajapaksa revoked the state of emergency he declared on April 1. For the same, a gazette notification no 2274/10 was issued in which the President stated that he has withdrawn the emergency rule ordinance. The emergency rule gave exceptional powers to the security forces of Sri Lanka to deal with any protests and disturbances in the country. President Rajapaksa imposed a state of emergency on April 1st, as the protests turned violent amid the worst economic crisis in the history of Sri Lanka. The opposition parties have been continuously protesting against the state of emergency since it was imposed. As protests and demonstrations turned violent, many people sustained injuries. Police fired tear gas and water cannons at the protesters after they took down a steel barricade placed near President Rajapaksa’s residence. Fuel and essential commodities prices have shot up in Sri Lanka, as Foreign Reserve Exchange is depleting. President Rajapaksa, on the other hand, has defended his government’s actions and told that the foreign exchange crisis was not because of his government’s policies and the economic slowdown was majorly pandemic driven as the island's tourism revenue declined significantly.
