News Synopsis

A top official of the European Union, On Wednesday, informed that the European Union has paid $38 billion for Russian energy since Russia invaded its neighbor- Ukraine. After Moscow declared war on Ukraine, the trading bloc imposed sanctions on Russia. It imports around 60% of its energy needs. While the European Union has vowed to decrease the Russian energy imports and backed a proposal on Wednesday to ban Russian energy, coal, oil, and gas continue to flow to countries that Russia has dubbed "unfriendly." According to the Wall Street Journal, the trading bloc's foreign-policy chief, Josep Borrell told that since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, 27 members of the European Union have made energy payments worth about 35 billion euros, or roughly $38 billion. However, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the officials of the European Union aim to establish escrow accounts. These accounts will be used by the bloc to funnel at least some of its energy payments. An escrow account will freeze the revenue from overseas Russian energy. However, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin has declared that Russia would stop its energy supply if the country can't access payments for it.
