News Synopsis

Under the Production Linked Incentive Program for High-Efficiency Solar PV Modules, the government has given 11 businesses a combined total of 39,600 MW of Domestic Solar PV Module Manufacturing Capacity for a total investment of Rs 14,007 crore (Tranche-II).

By October 2024, 7400 MW worth of manufacturing capacity is expected to be operational, followed by 16,800 MW by April 2025, and the remaining 15,400 MW by April 2026. Investment in Tranche-II is expected to total Rs 93,041 crore. Also, it will result in the creation of 1,01,487 jobs overall, of which 35,010 will be recruited directly and 66,477 indirectly.

Speaking about the PLI project's success, Union Power Minister R K Singh said that India was well on its way to moving up the value chain in the production of high-tech Solar PV Modules and that this capacity expansion is a significant step towards making India Aatmanirbhar in the Solar Manufacturing Industry.

"Within the next three years, there will be a 48 GW domestic module manufacturing capacity thanks to the PLI Scheme, which has demonstrated to be a defining moment in India's Renewable Energy landscape. In line with the Prime Minister's vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the scheme has strengthened the government's efforts to lessen not just the impact of global supply chain shocks but also our dependence on imports "Said Singh.

In November and December 2022, 8737 MW of total integrated capacity was assigned under Tranche-I of the Scheme. With total support from the government of more than Rs 18,500 crore, the total domestic solar PV module manufacturing capacity allocated under the PLI Scheme is 48,337 MW when the two tranches are taken into account.
