News Synopsis

As U.S. regulators said on Thursday that Tesla Inc's Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta software did not fully follow traffic safety laws and could result in crashes, the company will recall more than 362,000 American vehicles in order to update the software.

The Tesla software, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), "exceed speed limits or travel through intersections in an unlawful or unpredictable manner increases the risk of a crash."

Although claiming to disagree with NHTSA's analysis, Tesla ultimately complied with the agency's January request. The manufacturer of electric vehicles and NHTSA have previously clashed over various safety concerns and recall demands; NHTSA currently has a number of Tesla probes pending.

Tesla will release a free over-the-air (OTA) software update. Shares of Tesla closed down 5.7% at $202.04. The EV manufacturer said it is not aware of any injuries or deaths that might be connected to the recall issue. 18 warranty claims, according to the automaker.

Model S, Model X, Model 3, and 2020–2023 Model Y vehicles having FSD Beta software installed or scheduled for installation are included in the recall.

Both Democratic US senators Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal stated that the recall was long overdue and that Tesla should stop overstating the actual capabilities of its vehicles.

For Tesla's driver assistance system, this is a new setback. Elon Musk, the CEO, has frequently fallen short of his own targets to develop self-driving capabilities, which he has touted as a major cash cow.

The decision is a rare federal regulatory interference in a real-world testing programme that the company views as essential to the creation of self-driving cars.

The recall occurs less than two weeks before the company's investor day on March 1, when Elon Musk is anticipated to promote the EV maker's use of artificial intelligence and its aspirations to expand its vehicle lineup.
