News Synopsis

According to a new report, the global chip shortage and supply chain issues have impacted electric vehicle (EV) quality across the board, including Tesla, which continues its trend of shoddy manufacturing. Polestar is ranked last by consumer research and analytics firm JD Power, while Elon Musk's Tesla is ranked seventh from the bottom. JD Power identified 226 issues per 100 Tesla vehicles.

Owners of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) report more vehicle problems than owners of vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICEs), according to the report. In comparison to 2021 results, the EV industry experienced an 11% increase in problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), which is 18 PP100 higher than the previous year, resulting in an industry average of 180 PP100.

General Motors defies the trend with an increase in initial quality that places it first among automotive corporations.
Buick's quality improves 17 PP100 year over year, propelling it to first place overall in 2022, up from 12th place in 2021, while Genesis ranks first among premium brands. Only nine of the top 33 brands improved their vehicle quality year over year.

"Given the many challenges automakers and their dealers had to face in the past year, it's somewhat surprising that initial quality didn't fall even more dramatically," said David Amodeo, director of global automotive at JD Power.
