News Synopsis

The Transport Minister of India, Nitin Gadkari has said that U.S. EV maker Tesla Inc is welcome to set up manufacturing facilities in India to manufacture and export cars for sale there, but it must not import cars from China to sell in the country. He said, “Making in China and selling here is not a good proposition.”

Tesla is desperate to import and sell its electric vehicles in India after lobbying officials in New Delhi for about a year to reduce tariffs. According to the Tesla CEO, tariffs in India are among the highest in the world.

However, its effort has stagnated as Tesla has not announced plans to invest in India. This is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of "Make in India"  to boost local manufacturing and create jobs.
