News Synopsis

The Indian car industry was left in jolt when US carmaker Ford abandoned its activities in India last year. Above all, the workers who make up the salaries of the automaker and dealer network had to bear the brunt. The livelihood of almost 40,000 families was affected as Ford stopped the manufacturing facility.

But latest reports suggest that Tata Motors is ready to acquire the manufacturing facility of Ford near Sanand, Gujarat. The deal to transfer the Ford India plant to Tata Motors is most likely to get finalised next week.

Ever since Ford announced its exit from India, speculation of Tata Motors taking over the Sanand plant has been made. Along with increasing the car production of Tata Motors, it will certainly be a relief for thousands of workers who worked at the manufacturing plant.

Ford India manufacturing facilities are spread over a total of 350 acres in Maraimalai Nagar, 45 km from Chennai with an annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles and 340,000 engines. At Chennai Factory, SUVs such as Eco-port and Endeavour were created. Ford also operated its second production site of Sanand, where Figo, Freestyle and Aspire were manufactured.
