News Synopsis

For the purpose of serving as the official broadcast distributor for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, Formula-E and the Indian telecom giant Tata Communications have entered into a multi-year strategic partnership.

In accordance with the agreement, Tata Communications will supply Formula E's new remote broadcast production with high-definition and fast live broadcasts for spectators everywhere. The goal of this is to lower the price of sports broadcasting while also lowering the impact on the environment.

The transmission of the Hyderabad-based 2023 Greenko E-Prix, the country's first Formula E race, was handled by Tata Communications.

"There are 85 cameras capturing the event for over 400 million people watching all over the world. To be able to facilitate that truly speaks about the power of the internet that we have been able to leverage, with our dedicated media cloud and edge computing capabilities. And apart from our long-standing partnership with FIA, we extend the services to multiple major sporting leagues across the world,” according to AS Lakshminarayanan, CEO of Tata Communications.

Tata Communications will use 26 media edge locations spread across North America, Europe, and Asia to relay more than 160 live video and audio feeds from Formula E races across continents as part of the distant broadcasting system.

The central broadcast hub in London and the partnership with Tata Communications have both assisted in cutting costs and emissions, according to Jamie Reigle, chief executive officer of Formula E.

"Formula E is an intense tour given its on-the-go nature. Tata Communications' support over the years has enabled state-of-the-art remote production possible, with real-time TV signal transmissions from the race venues to our broadcast center in London and finally to the audience's screens. Thus, bringing down multiple logistical challenges, driving cost efficiencies, travel flexibilities for our employees, especially women, and reducing emissions," added Reigle.

According to Eric Ernst, the technology director of Formula E, the new broadcast system, which depends on shared internet lines rather than leased lines, has helped lower the cost by about 40%. The plug-and-play setup used by the company has also made logistics simpler because it drastically reduces the amount of setup and personnel needed to run it.

“We have 50% less freight and people, which has played a big role in reducing the logistics cost,”  said Ernst.

The company has 49 employees at its London location and a 51-person entourage that travels to the racetrack with the equipment.
