Smartphone Shipments to Cross 170 Million Units in 2022

News Synopsis
Total smartphone shipments are expected to exceed 170 million units in 2022, with 5G mobile shipments in India by more than 300% (year-on-year) in the first quarter, according to a new report released Wednesday. In the first quarter, Samsung led the 5G segment with a 23% market share.
According to CyberMedia Research's India Mobile Handset Market Review Report, shipments of affordable smartphones declined, while premium smartphones surged 58%, showing a strong appetite to switch and upgrade.
Menka Kumari, Analyst-Industry Intelligence Group, CMR has said, “The smartphone industry continues to face major headwinds, including prevailing supply-side dynamics, and resultant raw material shortages. While the initial two months of the quarter remain muted, March bucked the trend, with growth picking-up.”
Apple shipments increased 20% year-on-year in the first quarter, up 77% above the Super Premium segment market share. In the first quarter of 2022, the entire feature phone segment was down 43% (year-on-year) due to supply constraints, higher operator tariff plans, and rising inflation trends. The 2G and 4G feature phone segments were down 42% and 50% year-on-year, respectively.
