News Synopsis

Skippy Foods recalled thousands of cases of peanut butter about concerns that it could contain stainless steel debris from some factory equipment. The company that belongs to Hormel Foods Corp said it was recalling more than 9,000 cases of low-fat products.

A spokeswoman of the company has said that the recall was issued after repairs at a manufacturing plant, where a small piece of equipment may have fallen into a jar.

The company said in a statement Wednesday, “Skippy Foods is voluntarily recalling 9,353 cases, or 161,692 total pounds, of a limited number of code dates.” The recall is applicable in the USA only. The company has asked affected customers to return recalled products to the retailer.

The Skippy brand was introduced in 1032 and is the number 2 peanut butter brand in the USA by sales, according to market researcher Euromonitor International.

Hormel, which owns household brands such as Planters, Spam and Dinty Moore, strengthened its global footprint by purchasing Skippy from Unilever PLC  for about $700 million in 2013. Based in Austin, Minnesota, the company produces more than 90 million glasses each year, according to the website.
