News Synopsis

Saudi Arabia has revealed plans to turn an oil rig into a 150,000-square-meter adventure park and resort in the Middle East. The rig is in the Gulf of Aden. The upcoming attraction is being designed in line with the long-term Saudi Vision 2030 strategy, which aims to transpose Saudi Arabia as a top international tourism spot and expand its economy. It is being described as the world's first tourism destination inspired by offshore oil platforms. The location is being built as part of a new metropolis outside of Riyadh, and when it opens in 2023, it will be home to the world's fastest roller coaster. However, the government is aiming to reinvent itself as a desirable global destination that can compete with Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Oman. By the end of the decade, it hopes to have attracted 100 million visitors.

The Rig, which is funded by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, will have three hotels and 11 restaurants distributed across multiple connected platforms, as well as roller coasters and adrenaline-pumping activities like bungee jumping and skydiving. The attraction was unveiled by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which uses profits from oil sales to fund commercial ventures in the kingdom.

Earlier this month, renderings of the forthcoming attraction, which will provide a variety of accommodation options, adventures, and aquatic sporting activities, as well as a promotional film, were published.
