News Synopsis

Russian prosecutors have warned the western companies in Russia and threatened to arrest corporate leaders who criticized the government and seized the assets of companies that had withdrawn from the country.

The prosecution last week warned companies such as Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Procter & Gamble, KFC and International Business Machines Corp. The calls, letters, and visits included a threat to sue the company and confiscate assets, including the trademark.

Russian President Vladimir Putin last week announced his support for a law that nationalises the assets of foreign companies leaving the country due to its invasion of Ukraine. The prosecution's warning targeted companies in various sectors such as technology, food, clothing and banks, people familiar with the matter said.

According to some, the warning was intended to limit communication between Russian businesses and other companies due to concerns that emails and text messages between colleagues could be intercepted.
