News Synopsis

Reliance Jio Infocomm, the country's biggest telecom operator, has completed 5G coverage plans in 1,000 cities across the country and performed field trials across its homegrown technology at sites. Jio also has several use cases for 5G within industries like healthcare, industrial automation, and more, Reliance Industries chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani stated.

India is preparing to join the 5G train. "Technology in Internet, Communication and Telecom (ICT), continues to make rapid progress globally and India is getting ready for it." RJio has also made significant steps to prepare for 5G with its 100% native technology," Ambani stated in the company’s annual report.

Jio Platforms is Jio's holding company for RIL digital firms. Jio is Jio's subsidiary. The company's 5G platform is completely homegrown, fully cloud-native, digitally defined and managed by the company. This stack includes radio and core network, software architecture, hardware equipment, and outdoor small cells. Jio has also conducted field trials for 5G use cases, including Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality as well as network slicing, network slicing and multi-tenancy. This includes video delivery, TV streaming, and industrial applications. Jio also has a strategic partnership with Google Cloud Solutions and joined forces with University of Oulu in Finland in order to accelerate research and standardization for 6G (next-generation telecom technology).

Jio is determined to make India 2G-mukt so that everyone can benefit from digital connectivity, even the most disadvantaged. Inefficient 2G is becoming obsolete thanks to the advancements in telecom technology. Since 2016, the Jio revolution has brought down the 4G tariffs to below those in India. Ambani stated that handset affordability is a significant hurdle for more than 250 million Indians and has prevented a transition into digital networks. In collaboration with Google, Jio launched JioPhone Next to overcome this affordability barrier. He said that the phone runs on Pragati OS, which is a optimized version Google's Android OS.

Jio was the highest bidder in the recent 5G spectrum auction. He had a cumulative bid worth Rs 88.078 crore for 24,740MHz of airwaves across five band bands. On August 1, 5G spectrum auctions received over Rs 1.5 trillion in bids. Jio purchased almost half of that spectrum. Jio also purchased the 700 MHz spectrum that is highly sought after. This spectrum can be used to provide signal range of 6-10 km with one tower and provides a solid base for 5G services throughout the country.
