News Synopsis

Sci-fi horror game Returnal won four awards at the Bafta Games Awards 2022, including the top honour of best game for the Playstation 5 shooter. Jane Perry won the nest leading performer for playing Returnal’s Selene. Returnal won the awards for the best game, Audio achievement, Music, and Performing in a leading role won by Jane Perry. 

In her acceptance speech at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, she thanked Bafta for recognising the artistry and the incredible talent in the games industry. She also thanked the game’s makers for bringing to life and several deaths the person who became Selene. 

Tim Dawson and Wren Brier won two awards for Unpacking, a puzzle game in which a woman’s life unfolds as the player unboxes her possessions over a series of house moves. The game also won the award for the EE game of the year, the only category that is voted by the public.

Racing game, Forza Horizon 5 won the award for the best British game, which is set in Mexico but made in Leamington Spa by Playground Games. “It Takes Two” won the title for the best original property and for the best multiplayer game. 

Gaming boomed in popularity during the pandemic. Last week, it was revealed that the Brits spent a record £ 7.16 billion on games, hardware and accessories in 2021, up 32% from 2019.
