News Synopsis

India’s billionaire, Mukesh Ambani, and Sunil Mittal have found their respective partner to launch their own satellite broadband services. Reliance Jio, owned by Ambani, has established a joint venture (JV) with SES, a provider of satellite-based content and connectivity solutions based in Luxembourg. In January of this year, Airtel announced a joint venture with Hughes Communications to provide satellite broadband services domestically.

Nelco, a division of the billionaire Tata Group, is also reportedly in talks with the Canadian company Telesat's Lightspeed brand to provide satellite broadband services domestically by 2024.  Another player considering entering the Indian satellite broadband market is Amazon as part of the Project Kruiper satellite constellation.

The satellite broadband company of Elon Musk, Starlink has also been trying to enter the Indian market but was asked to refund the pre-orders that it had accepted as the company has not secured a license to operate in the second largest telecom market of the world.

Satellite broadband uses satellites orbiting the earth in order to provide internet services to people using a dish. It does not require users to get a wired connection from the operators to be operated like traditional telecom services.
