News Synopsis

Princess Mako of Japan married her non-royal college sweetheart Kei Komuro in a low-key wedding, thus ending her reign as a member of the royal family. Mako's marriage to Kei Komuro lost her royal title, and she now bears her husband's surname. Mako gave rejected a one-time million-dollar payoff from the government, which she was entitled to as a leaving princess, to please a dissenting public. Mako was not able to succeed to the throne as the emperor's niece since Japan's male-only succession legislation precludes it. Female members of the royal family confirmed her engagement to Komuro four years ago. But, due to a money issue involving Komuro's mother, their relationship has been dogged by years of controversy, public condemnation, and tabloid frenzy.

According to the Imperial Household Agency, the couple's marriage paperwork was filed and declared official by a palace official. The couple did not have a wedding meal or any other wedding ceremonies. According to the agency, their marriage is not widely publicized.
