President Gotabaya Rajapaksa says that New PM will be appointed this week

Amid nationwide anti-government protests,

Sri Lanka's President Gotabaya Rajapaksa

on Wednesday informed that this week, he will appoint a new Prime Minister and a Cabinet. The Cabinet and the Prime Minister will introduce constitutional reforms. While addressing the country, President Gotabaya stated that after appointing the new Prime Minister, and Government a constitutional amendment will be moved to enact the content of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

In his statement, the President said, "I will appoint a young cabinet without any of the Rajapaksas. The new government's Prime Minister will be awarded the opportunity to produce a new program and take this country forward.”

The island nation has been without a government for the last two days after President Gotabaya's elder brother and prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned. Sri Lanka is facing its worst-ever economic crisis

On increasing violence, the President of Sri Lanka further commented, "The murders, assaults, acts of intimidation, destruction of property, and the series of heinous acts that followed cannot be justified at all.” He further informed that the Inspector General of Police has been directed to carry out the investigations.
