News Synopsis

Pakistani political parties, the incumbent Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) government, and the exiled Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, led by Imran Khan, blamed each other on Sunday for the country's economic turmoil.

Two days after the budget was officially announced in parliament, PML-N and PTI continued to vie for each other's economic performance and Pakistan's external debt situation, Dawn reported. Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb used Twitter today to share a video clip of the news package with former finance minister Shaukat Tarin.

Meanwhile, PTI's Fawad Chaudhry said their government has borrowed $52 billion, of which $38 billion has been used to repay loans borrowed by the previous government. "If you don't like the deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF),  why do poor governments join the board?" He asked.

According to a Pakistani economic survey, total external debt increased by about $2.3 billion in the first nine months of the year to reach $88.8 billion (Rs 16.29 trillion) by the end of March 2022.
