News Synopsis

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for his visit to Poland, Lodz Governor Dorota Ryl has highlighted the event’s importance, emphasizing that Poland views India as a vital business partner. In a recent interview, Ryl noted the frequent visits by Polish business delegations to India and underscored the strategic value of PM Modi’s visit for both Poland and its regional ties with India.

PM Modi's Upcoming Visit to Poland: A Significant Milestone for India-Poland Relations

Governor Ryl remarked, “Prime Minister Modi’s visit is of immense significance to Poland and the region. We have notable examples, such as Infosys, which employs over 3,000 people locally, and more than 200 Indian MSMEs actively participating in various sectors here. Polish business delegations frequently visit India, reflecting Poland’s view of India as a prime partner for business and potential collaborations.”

Deputy Mayor of Lodz Shares Enthusiasm

Adding to the growing anticipation, Lodz Deputy Mayor Adam Pustelnik expressed his excitement about PM Modi’s visit and the high expectations surrounding it. He emphasized that the discussions between PM Modi and Polish leaders, including Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda, represent a critical moment for both nations.

Pustelnik stated, “I am thrilled that Prime Minister Modi will be visiting our country and engaging in talks with our top leaders. It is a unique and significant event.”

He further noted, “While it is challenging to set specific expectations, I believe it is more pertinent to consider how we can support India and enhance our mutual relations and growth. This visit is one of the most important events in recent times, and I have very high hopes for its outcomes.”

A Historic Moment for India-Poland Relations

Amit Lath, Vice President of the Indo-Polish Chamber of Commerce and a Pravasi Bharatiya award recipient, described PM Modi’s visit as “historic,” noting that it marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland in 45 years. The previous visit occurred in 1979, led by Morarji Desai.

“This visit is a historic occasion, as it is the first time in 45 years that an Indian Prime Minister is coming to Poland. The last visit was by Morarji Desai in 1979. This is a crucial step forward for strengthening the partnership between India and Poland. Poland, known as the ‘tiger of the economy’ in Central Europe and among the top five European economies, has a strategic location that facilitates trade and cooperation across Central, Eastern, and Western Europe. I am confident that this visit will foster discussions on numerous areas of collaboration, benefiting both governments and businesses,” Lath observed.

He also highlighted the growing influence of Indian culture in Poland, particularly through the increasing popularity of Indian cuisine. “We have been operating in Poland for 25 years and have witnessed significant growth. Indian vegetarian food has become a popular trend. When Europeans hear about vegetarian food, they inquire about it, and we introduce them to Indian cuisine—naan, kulcha, parathas, samosas, and a variety of dishes from across India. This not only strengthens our relationship but also highlights how food can bridge cultures,” Lath added.

Lath further noted the progress India has made under PM Modi’s leadership, which has notably enhanced India’s global standing. “India has been evolving rapidly over the past decade. Global travel has made this progress visible. Leadership plays a pivotal role in this transformation. With the world’s youngest population, India generates excitement in Europe, where it is often viewed as a dream destination. Many people express a desire to visit India, whether through business delegations or personal trips,” he said.

Potential Areas for Collaboration: Pharma, IT, and Agriculture

Discussing potential collaborative opportunities, Lath identified several promising sectors. “The pharmaceutical sector, where Poland plays a crucial role, offers significant collaboration opportunities for Indian companies. The IT sector is already established but holds further potential for expansion. Additionally, agriculture and the food industry present ample avenues for cooperation,” he noted.

A Landmark Visit After 45 Years

PM Modi will visit Poland on August 21-22, following an invitation from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. MEA Secretary (West) Tanmaya Lal characterized the visit as “landmark,” marking the first Indian Prime Minister visit to Poland in 45 years.

In a briefing, Lal stated, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Poland on August 21 and 22 at the invitation of Prime Minister Donald Tusk. This visit is historic, as it’s the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland in 45 years, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of our diplomatic relations.”

Lal also noted the strong bond between the two nations, mentioning the Indian community in Poland, which includes around 25,000 people and approximately 5,000 students. “The government and people of Poland played a crucial role during ‘Operation Ganga,’ evacuating over 4,000 Indian students from Ukraine through Poland in 2022. Additionally, our historical ties date back to the 1940s when over 6,000 Polish women and children were given refuge in Jamnagar and Kolhapur,” Lal said.

During his visit, PM Modi will meet with Polish leaders and engage with the Indian community, receiving a ceremonial welcome in Warsaw. Following his visit to Poland, PM Modi will travel to Ukraine.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Poland marks a significant milestone in the history of India-Poland relations. With Poland viewing India as a key partner for business and collaboration, this visit is expected to further strengthen the economic and cultural ties between the two nations. The anticipated discussions with Polish leaders, coupled with the growing presence of Indian businesses in Poland, underscore the potential for deepening cooperation across various sectors, including IT, pharma, agriculture, and more. As both countries look forward to the outcomes of this historic visit, it sets the stage for a new chapter of enhanced bilateral relations, paving the way for future growth and mutual prosperity.
