News Synopsis

The government has appointed Parameswaran Iyer as the next Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog to replace Amitabh Kant, whose term will end on June 30.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet said in a notification on Friday, “Iyer has been appointed for a period of two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier, on the same terms and conditions as were applicable in respect of Shri Amitabh Kant.”

Iyer entered the Indian Government Services in 1981, retired voluntarily in 2009, and participated in the World Bank's Water and Sanitation Initiative. In 2016, Iyer returned to India and was appointed by the government to head the Department of Hygiene and Swachh Bharat Mission.

Prior to joining the Ministry of Water Purification and Sanitation in 2016, he worked for the World Bank in Vietnam, China, Egypt, Lebanon, and Washington. In 2020, Iyer resigned from that position and returned to the United States to return to the World Bank.

Kant was appointed the CEO of NITI Aayog for two years on February 17, 2016. Since then, he has received three extensions. Kant is valued for identifying a long list of public sector companies for sale and monetization of assets.
