News Synopsis

This month, the government had accepted an offer by Talace Pvt Ltd, a unit of the holding company of salt-to-software conglomerate Tata group, to pay Rs 2,700 crore cash and takeover Rs 15,300 crore of the airline's debt. This makes Ratan Tata, the Indian industrialist, the head of Tata Groups the owner of Air India. While the opposition is claiming this deal is like “selling the family silver”, DIPAM has a completely opposite outlook. DIPAM Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey said TATA groups have not owned some money-making machine, rather it’s the exact opposite, it will now have to invest huge amount of money to refurbish obsolete aircraft and dust up strangled ones while being unable to touch any employee for one year and only be able to resize staff after paying a VRS (Voluntary Retirement Scheme).
