News Synopsis

On Friday, Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan informed that it is working with the space agency of the United States, NASA, on a new type of battery for electric vehicles. This battery will be faster to charge, lighter in weight, and safer to use. Nissan claimed that this all-solid-state battery will replace the currently used lithium-ion battery for a 2028 product launch. Its pilot project will be launched in 2024. It will be stable enough to be used in pacemakers. It will be almost half the size of the current battery and will be fully charged in about 15 minutes.

Corporate Vice President Kazuhiro Doi told reporters that the partnership with NASA as well as the University of California San Diego, involves the testing of various materials. He said: "Both NASA and Nissan need the same kind of battery.” They are using a computerized database. It is used to test various combinations to see what works best among hundreds of thousands of materials. Their aim is to avoid the use of expensive materials like rare metals which are currently used to make lithium-ion batteries. A few days back,  General Motors and Honda Motors also announced that they are collectively developing next-generation electric vehicles.
