News Synopsis

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has implemented the "One Vehicle, One FASTag" rule nationwide, effective April 1, 2024. This initiative aims to streamline toll collection and address previous concerns about FASTag misuse.

Why the "One Vehicle, One FASTag" Rule?

Previously, some motorists misused the FASTag system by either:

  • Having multiple FASTags for a single vehicle: This could lead to confusion and potential toll payment discrepancies.

  • Obtaining FASTags without proper KYC (Know Your Customer) verification: This posed security risks and violated RBI guidelines.

  • Not properly affixing FASTags to windscreens: This resulted in delays at toll plazas due to failed readings.

The "One Vehicle, One FASTag" rule addresses these concerns and promotes a more efficient toll collection system.

What You Need to Know as a FASTag User?

  • One Active FASTag per Vehicle: All but the most recently acquired FASTag linked to a vehicle will be deactivated.

  • Flexibility in Recharge Options: Users can recharge their active FASTag through any bank or payment method like BBPS, UPI, or net banking.

How to Check Your FASTag Status

  1. Visit the official website: https://www.npci.org.in/what-we-do/netc-fastag/check-your-netc-fastag-status

  2. Enter your vehicle details.

  3. Click "Submit."

  4. Review the information displayed for each FASTag linked to your vehicle.

Complete Your FASTag KYC (if applicable)

  • Incomplete KYC information on your FASTag will be communicated through email, SMS, or your bank's app.

  • To update KYC:

Important Reminders for FASTag Users:

  • A FASTag is linked to a specific vehicle based on its registration certificate. Using it on another vehicle can lead to blacklisting.

  • Non-KYC FASTag wallets will be restricted from adding funds after two years, but existing balance can be used until depletion.

  • KYC processing takes up to seven working days. Track your status on the customer portal.

  • Complete FASTag KYC: Incomplete KYC can lead to tag deactivation. Update your KYC online through the NHAI FASTag website (https://fastag.ihmcl.com/) or your bank's FASTag portal (https://www.netc.org.in/). Banks and the FASTag system will notify you via email, SMS, or app if your KYC needs updating.

  • Using FASTags on Multiple Vehicles: A FASTag is linked to a specific vehicle's registration number. Using it on another vehicle can lead to blacklisting, preventing further FASTag issuance for that vehicle.

  • Non-KYC Wallets: If you haven't upgraded your KYC within two years as a non-KYC wallet holder, you can no longer add funds. However, you can use the remaining balance until it depletes or the tag is blocked.

  • KYC Processing Time: Allow up to seven working days for KYC update processing. You can track the status on the customer portal. Approval depends on the validity and accuracy of submitted documents.

Conclusion: A More Efficient Toll System for Everyone

The "One Vehicle, One FASTag" rule signifies a positive step towards a more streamlined and secure toll collection system on National Highways. By eliminating misuse and ensuring proper KYC verification, the NHAI aims to improve traffic flow and enhance the overall experience for all highway users.
