News Synopsis

After multiple companies, Nestlé is also planning to scale back its sales in Russia by suspending the production of pet foods, coffee and confectionery as the company faces pressure from politicians, employees and consumers for its presence in Russia.

Swiss packaged food giant said that it will focus on providing basic necessities as Russia's war in Ukraine continues. It is not immediately expected to make a profit or pay any taxes in Russia, but the company said all the profits it produces will be donated to humanitarian charities.

The only products of the company sold in Russia would be baby food and other infant nutrition items, specialist veterinary meals and medical-nutrition products.

Nestlé has already suspended imports and exports of products it deemed nonessential. But the company kept all of its Russian factories open for the production of goods for local sales.

Russia is an attractive market for Nestlé. Last month, the company acknowledged strong demand in the country by helping  Europe, the Middle East and North Africa region record the highest sales growth in the last decade.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal also tweeted last week that he spoke with Nestlé CEO Mark Schneider, and said that he showed no understanding of the side effects of continuing to sell in Russia.
