News Synopsis

Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra won the javelin throw at the Kuortane Games in Finland, defeating reigning world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada for the second time.

The 24-year-old Chopra's first 86.69m throw proved to be a victory at a long distance. Trinidad and Tobago’s 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott finished second with a long throw of 86.64m. Peters finished third with a better throw of 84.75m, which also came in the opening round.

Chopra's second and third attempts were fouled and he only made three throws. This meant that Chopra had only one legal throw and he won the competition with it. His throw wasn't as great as his 89.30m effort while second in the Paavo Nurmi Olympics in Turku, Finland in a star field, but the win is sure to boost his confidence on the eve of the Stockholm Diamond League on June 30.

Chopra made a spectacular return to competition after a historic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics with a stunning  89.30m throw, breaking his own national record, placing him second in the star-studded field at the Paavo Nurmi Olympics in Turku, Finland, on Tuesday.
