News Synopsis

NASA recently announced that it is testing a communication technology called "holoportation." This is a word that sounds like a science fiction movie that has little to do with everyday life. However, this word is a combination of "hologram" and "teleport". Last October, NASA used this innovative 3D technology to "holoport" Joseph Schmid to the International Space Station while remaining physically present on Earth to aviators.

This technique created Dr. Schmidt's 3D hologram and his team members beamed them towards the space station for what appeared to be live interaction with astronauts. According to Schmidt, corporation allows high-quality 3D human models to be reconstructed, compressed, and broadcast live anywhere in real-time.

Keep in mind that the technology used for holoportation is not new. Microsoft has been using it since at least 2016. Meanwhile, NASA became the first to use holoportation in 2021, in environments as extreme and remote as space.

NASA plans to use this technology extensively in future space missions, including two-way communications, Earth-to-space people's holoports, and astronauts on Earth for medical, psychiatric, and family conferences and to have VIPs onto the space station. According to the space agency, it is also possible to combine this technology with augmented reality.
