News Synopsis

Mustafa Suleyman, a co-founder of Google DeepMind, has joined Microsoft, marking a big hire. Suleyman revealed his new position as CEO of a recently established group at Microsoft tasked with managing the business's AI products aimed at consumers, such as Edge, Bing, and Copilot.

Mustafa Suleyman Reports Directly to Nadella

Mustafa Suleyman will take on the dual responsibilities of executive vice president of Microsoft AI and CEO of the consumer AI products unit. He will become a member of the company's senior leadership group and will answer directly to CEO Satya Nadella.

Suleyman co-founded DeepMind, a renowned AI research facility, in 2010; Google later purchased DeepMind in 2014.

Suleyman has not been actively involved with the division for several years, despite DeepMind continuing to be Google's driving force in AI.

As Bloomberg reported in 2019, he was put on leave due to criticism surrounding some of the projects he oversaw.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Google and DeepMind then started looking into concerns about Suleyman's alleged bullying behavior.

Microsoft Recruits Inflection AI Talent

Google stated that Suleyman has been appointed as vice president of AI product management and AI policy, after his departure from DeepMind. But in 2022, he left Google to co-found the firm Inflection AI.

Suleyman is not the only Inflection AI staff member that Microsoft has hired. Co-founder Karén Simonyan, for example, joined the company and will lead the consumer AI group as chief scientist. Kevin Scott, who is now the senior vice president of AI at Microsoft, will stay in this position.

In a Microsoft memo to staff members, Satya Nadella mentioned how impressed he was with Suleyman's achievements and said, "We have a real shot to build technology that was once thought impossible and that lives up to our mission to ensure the benefits of AI reach every person and organization on the planet, safely and responsibly."

Microsoft is dedicated to its current alliances, such as its cooperation with OpenAI and the recent agreement with AI startup Mistral, even in the wake of the establishment of a new AI team.

Microsoft Expands AI Integration Across Edge, Windows 11, and Office Suite

The business underlines that, in support of OpenAI's foundation model plan, it will keep funding AI infrastructure, including specialized systems and silicon work. Microsoft intends to build products on top of these basic models as well.

Microsoft has been Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its range of goods and services for some time. Microsoft expanded the use of its AI assistant to include the Edge browser, Windows 11, and the Office suite when Bing Chat (now Copilot) launched last year.

In addition, the business is getting ready to organize a special AI event in advance of its Build conference in May, when it is anticipated to provide more information regarding its AI projects for Windows and Surface devices.
