News Synopsis

The VR department of Meta is under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission and other multiple US states. The third party Oculus app developers has been questioned by the FTC and an undisclosed number of US states led by New York over the last few months.

The investigation is looking into if Oculus uses its market position to get rid of competition in the market or not. Oculus is an important part in Meta’s metaverse.

Earlier when Facebook rebranded itself to Meta, the CEO Mark Zeckerberg announced two main businesses, the social media business and Reality Labs, its VR and AR hardware division.

The head of Reality Labs, Andrew Bosworth announced that the Oculus brand will be dissolved in early 2022 and replaced the Oculus app with Meta app. Meta on the other hand is already a subject of scrutiny by the FTC under a lawsuit which aims to force Meta to sell off its subsidiaries Instagram and WhatsApp. Last week a judge approved the FTC antitrust lawsuit against Meta saying that it can proceed.
