News Synopsis

After changing its name to Meta, the tech giant formerly known as Facebook is being sued by another company with the same name. The lawsuit was filed in a Manhattan court on Tuesday by the company, which is registered as MetaX LLC but goes by "Meta" in its branding.

According to the lawsuit, the company was founded in 2010, applied for a trademark in 2016, and had it registered in 2020. It creates immersive technologies such as VR and AR. In October of last year, Facebook rebranded as Meta and announced a shift in focus to so-called "metaverse" technologies. This has so far included VR and AR technologies.

The lawsuit claims that Meta's rebranding, combined with its metaverse mission, has hurt MetaX's business. "Facebook's flagrant, unlawful conduct has crushed Meta," the company said in its lawsuit.

MetaX founder Justin "JB" Bolognino stated on Twitter that the company put "blood, sweat, and tears" into building its brand, which Meta "seized." According to MetaX, the rebranding has already caused consumer confusion, with one asking whether one of its products was "a Facebook thing."

The two companies' logos are also "conceptually identical," according to the lawsuit because they both use symmetrical shapes that resemble the letter "M."
