News Synopsis

Consumer giant McDonald’s, Coca-Cola and Starbucks have also halted their sales in Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine. McDonald’s has said that it was temporarily closing its 850 restaurants in Russia while Starbucks is shutting its 100 coffee shops in Russia as well.

Coca-Cola also announced the suspension of its operations in Russia, which accounted for roughly 2% of the firm’s operating revenue and income.

The companies took the decision after being under pressure to act as Russian violence against civilians has escalated. Both McDonald's and Coca-Cola faced backlash on Twitter over the weekend. McDonald’s however has said that it would continue to pay its roughly 62,000 staff in Russia. It has also been experiencing supply chain issues in Russia.

Several companies including Google, Meta, Netflix and others have already pulled their services in Russia. Other than these, L’Oreal the biggest cosmetics company in the world is also shutting its stores in Russia along with its online sales.
