News Synopsis

Mazda Motors, the Japanese automaker which disappeared from Ford Motor’s factory in Michigan, is once again planning to enter the USA with Toyota Motors.

When the first Mazda CX50 crossover was rolled off the assembly line at the Alabama Joint Plant in January, it was packed with efficiency improvements launched by two automakers known for their cost-cutting intelligence and manufacturing expertise.

For Mazda, resuming the local production, backed by Toyota's extensive local knowledge and reputation for reliability, is a turning point in which it hopes to increase sales in the world's second-largest market.

The 50-50 venture may look like a David-and-Goliath partnership, but it also gives a glimpse of how Toyota aims to acquire fresh skills from its growing roster of small partners.

As competition intensifies in the industry, especially with potential new entrants such as the Apple and Sony Group, Toyota has joined Mazda, compact car maker Suzuki Motor, and all-wheel drive specialist Subaru Corporation in recent years.

The tight employment market means that the factory has 900 fewer workers than the target of 4,000 and is operating in one shift instead of two. Mazda plans to increase US sales by about one-third to 450,000 units by the middle of the decade.
