News Synopsis

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Marvel's new animated superhero film, will be released on June 2nd in ten languages, including English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, and Bengali. It's the follow-up to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), and it's directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson. Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, and Issa Rae have all given it their voices. In theaters, it will clash with Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan.

After consecutive successes such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder in the first part of the year, a strong slate of movies in the second half of the year has helped Hollywood maintain its share of the Indian box office last year.

According to industry analysts, the growing popularity of American films in small towns is fueling the need for large-format cinemas in such areas, where youthful audiences carefully follow franchises and characters.

In 2019, Hollywood movies earned between  ₹1,250 crore- ₹1,300 crore out of the total 4,400 crore earned by theatrical releases in India across languages. In the post-pandemic period, Hollywood has fared significantly better than Hindi cinema.

Following the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which grossed over 218 crore in India when it was released in December 2021, Hollywood has given hits such as The Batman (48.10 crore), Doctor Strange (130 crore), Top Gun: Maverick (34.50 crore), Jurassic World Dominion (68.56 crore), and Thor: Love and Thunder (101.71 crore) in recent months.

As consumers explore new entertainment on streaming services, Hollywood is rebounding well from the plague. Yet, issues in India stem from the fact that, as technology advances, the worldwide trend is shifting toward larger forms and larger displays. Premium large-format theatres are becoming increasingly popular in India, yet they remain a luxury with enormous development potential.
