News Synopsis

MacKenzie Scott, one of the richest women in the world, has donated $436 million to Habitat for Humanity in one of the billionaire philanthropist's largest publicly disclosed donations.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Ms Scott has a net worth of around $54.4 billion. She signed a pledge to give away the majority of the wealth in 2019.

The chief executive of Habitat for Humanity International, Jonathan Reckford has said that the organisation has received $25 million from Ms Scott and her husband, Dan Jewett. He also said that the remaining $411 million will be shared among 84 local Habitat for Humanity affiliates.

Most of the $25 million will be used to increase the supply of affordable housing, Habitat said. The non-profit organisation was founded in 1976 and has partnered with local communities in all 50 states and 70 countries around the world to address housing shortages.

The local affiliates of Habitat will also have the gift to contribute to the organisation’s global ministry, which has committed $200,000 to offer housing support to refugees fleeing Ukraine after Russia’s invasion.

MacKenzie Scott said in June 2021 that she would donate $2.7 billion to 286 organizations. Scott and Jewett worked with researchers, managers and consultants to identify historically underfunded nonprofits operating in neglected areas, she wrote in a Medium post.
