News Synopsis

According to a recent report, Instagram will stop features that users have fought against and argued make the social network too similar to TikTok.

Celebrity sisters Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner were among the most passionate users this week, posting posts on social media urging the firm to "make Instagram Instagram again" and quit attempting to compete with TikTok. The tagline was inspired by a change.org petition that has over 229,000 signatures as of late Thursday.

"Lets go back to our roots with Instagram and remember that the intention behind Instagram was to share photos, for Pete's sake," the petition read. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri replied to the uproar earlier this week with a Twitter video in which he stated that the features were still in the works and were being tested with a small number of users.

Playing up short-form video, presenting it full-screen like TikTok, and promoting postings from strangers were among the changes. "We are going to have to lean into that shift." During an earnings call on Wednesday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg backed up that claim, noting that people are increasingly viewing video online.

Both Meta and Google have created their own versions of short-form video sharing in response to rising competition from TikTok for people's attention.
