News Synopsis

Instagram has introduced a major AI-powered update for Indian users and creators, expanding voice translation and lip-sync support in Reels to more Indian languages. The move highlights Meta’s growing focus on India as a key market, with advanced features being rolled out here at priority.

Instagram Reels Language Change Feature: What’s New?

Instagram has rolled out a significant update for creators and viewers in India. With the help of AI, Reels can now offer voice translation and lip-syncing in more Indian languages, making content more accessible across regions. This update underlines Meta’s strategy of prioritising India for early feature launches.

Expanded AI Voice Translation Support for Reels

Instagram has announced that it is expanding its AI-powered voice translation and lip-sync feature for Reels to include additional languages. Earlier, the feature was limited to English, Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese, but it has now been extended to cover more Indian languages.

Indian Languages Now Supported on Instagram Reels

Instagram Reels will now support the following five new Indian languages:

  • Bengali

  • Kannada

  • Marathi

  • Tamil

  • Telugu

The company had announced the addition of these languages back in November 2025, and the feature is now being gradually rolled out to creators and users.

Meta AI to Handle Voice Dubbing and Lip-Sync

With this feature, creators can use Meta AI to dub their Reels into multiple languages. Viewers will also get an option to change the language directly on the Reel, allowing them to watch content in their preferred language.

This gives creators the ability to reach a much wider audience without creating separate videos for each language.

Natural-Sounding Voice, Not Robotic

Instagram has emphasised that the translated voice will not sound artificial or robotic. Meta AI is designed to preserve the creator’s original voice tone, pitch, and emotional expression, ensuring the video still feels authentic.

The lip-sync technology also matches the translated audio with the speaker’s lip movements, making the video appear more natural and realistic.

Two India-Focused Updates Announced by Meta

During the “House of Instagram” event in Mumbai, Meta announced two major India-centric updates:

  1. Expanded Indian language support for Reels

  2. Support for Indian language fonts

According to Instagram, these updates will help creators connect more easily with new and diverse audiences across the country.

Indian Language Fonts Add a Local Touch

Meta is also adding Indian language fonts to its Edits app. Creators will be able to add text and captions in Devanagari and Bengali–Assamese scripts within videos.

Support for languages such as Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, and Marathi will soon roll out for Android users, giving content a stronger local identity.

A Big Opportunity for Indian Creators

With these updates, Indian creators can produce content in their native languages and reach audiences across different states more effectively. For viewers, Reels will become easier to understand and more inclusive, regardless of language barriers.

This update clearly reflects Instagram’s growing focus on India and its rapidly expanding creator ecosystem.
