News Synopsis

According to a Mercom India Research, India has increased its solar power capacity by 10 GW in the year 2021. In the year 2020, India was only able to add a mere 3.2 GW of solar power capacity. In the year 2021, the country’s solar power capacity increased by 212 percent year on year. In the report titled as 'Annual 2021 India Solar Market Update', India’s total solar capacity stands at 49 GW. The report stated: "India added a record 10 GW of solar in 2021, the highest ever in a year. Solar accounted for 62 per cent of new power capacity additions in 2021, the largest share of power capacity ever." Indian states of Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh were the highest contributors in increasing the solar power capacity of the country as they accounted for 50 percent of the installations in the country last year. Rajasthan was the leading state in terms of solar power installations as it added 4.5 GW of solar capacity last year. The report further said: "In 2021, solar tenders dipped 4.3 per cent y-o-y and auctions fell 2.6 per cent compared to 2020. The delay in signing power-sale agreements (PSA) and lack of clarity regarding applicable duties were some of the reasons for the slowdown in tender and auction activity,"
