News Synopsis

India’s transition towards a sustainable future is accelerating rapidly, with the green economy projected to reach $1 trillion by 2030 and an impressive $15 trillion by 2070, according to a recent report released on Monday.

This robust growth is expected to generate 7.29 million green jobs by FY 2027-28 and 35 million jobs by 2047, as highlighted in the NLB Services report.

Green Jobs Go Mainstream

“In the past 4–5 years, we’ve seen green jobs evolve from niche roles to mainstream opportunities across renewable energy, EVs, and sustainable infrastructure. What’s changed pragmatically is the skillsets,”
said NLB Services CEO Sachin Alug.

He added,

“Today’s green workforce needs both sustainability know-how and digital fluency, and the increased integration of AI, IoT, blockchain, GIS, and data-driven tools are laying the foundation for progressive, new-age green careers.”

Hiring Strategies Undergo Transformation

With the green sector booming, companies are no longer solely investing in clean technology—they are also revamping their talent strategies. Traditional degrees are being supplemented—or in some cases replaced—by practical experience and green skill certifications.

Employers are placing growing emphasis on hands-on experience, while many organisations are partnering with academic institutions to train students in sustainability-focused skills. The report also notes a rise in inclusive hiring and reskilling programmes to prepare the workforce for the green economy.

Stronger Employment Projections Than Expected

Initially, the green sector in India was projected to grow 15–20% annually in terms of job demand in 2024. However, newer data suggests even faster growth, especially in emerging sectors such as:

  • Renewable energy

  • Electric vehicles (EVs)

  • Green construction

  • Waste management

  • Sustainable textiles

Urban and Emerging Green Job Hubs

While metro cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi continue to lead in green job creation, Tier II and Tier III cities are quickly catching up.

Cities such as Jaipur, Indore, Visakhapatnam, Coimbatore, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, and Ahmedabad are rapidly emerging as key hubs for green employment. These urban centers are anticipated to generate 35–40% of the estimated 7.29 million green jobs by FY28, largely fueled by advancements in sustainable agriculture, green logistics, and eco-friendly warehousing solutions.

Expanding Scope of Green Careers

The scope of green job roles is expanding rapidly. There is an increasing demand for professionals in:

  • ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) analytics

  • Climate data analysis

  • Green technology applications

The report estimates a 20–30% annual increase in demand for these specialised roles, reflecting the shift towards data-driven sustainability solutions.

Conclusion

India’s green economy is on an impressive growth trajectory, with projections indicating the creation of 7.29 million green jobs by FY28 and a massive 35 million by 2047.

As the country aims to become a global leader in sustainability, this surge in employment opportunities reflects a significant shift in both industry practices and workforce demands.

The integration of digital tools like AI, IoT, and blockchain with green technologies is not only enhancing efficiency but also redefining job roles across sectors. With a growing focus on practical skills over traditional qualifications, companies are adapting their hiring strategies to meet the evolving needs of a climate-conscious world.

Moreover, the emergence of green employment centers in Tier II and Tier III cities reflects a broader and more inclusive shift towards a sustainable economy.

This moment presents a unique opportunity for India to align economic growth with environmental stewardship—paving the way for a sustainable and prosperous future.
