News Synopsis

India’s neighbor Sri Lanka is going through its worst economic crisis. The inflation in the country has reached a record high level. There is a shortage of fuel and essential commodities and their prices have skyrocketed. Amid the chaos, India has come forward to help its neighbor and sent vegetables and daily ration items as part of its aid to the struggling nation. Earlier, it sent over  270,000 MT of fuel to Sri Lanka and announced another USD 1 billion as a credit to Sri Lanka in order to revive the shrinking economy of the nation.

This credit will support the nation to keep its food prices and fuel costs under check. Last month, President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and informed him about the "initiatives being taken by both countries to increase bilateral economic cooperation, and conveyed his thanks for the support extended by India for the Sri Lankan economy." PM Modi earlier assured the Finance Minister of Sri Lanka Basil Rajapaksa that they will provide whatever help possible to its neighbor following its "neighborhood first policy."
