News Synopsis

After China, the United States, and the European Union, India is the world's fourth-largest carbon dioxide emitter. At the Glasgow summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the vow, which is the first time India has set a net-zero aim. Not contributing to the number of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is known as net-zero, or being carbon neutral. India has pledged to reduce its emissions to zero by 2070, falling short of a crucial objective set by the COP26 conference for countries to commit to achieving this goal by 2050 because of its large population, India's emissions per capita are substantially lower than those of other major international economies.

In 2019, India released 1.9 tonnes of CO2 per person, compared to 15.5 tonnes for the United States and 12.5 tonnes for Russia. PM Modi is considered as serious about addressing climate change without jeopardizing India's economic potential. While the net-zero goal of 2070 may have frustrated campaigners and experts in Glasgow, Mr. Modi appears to have impressed his countrymen.
