India was ranked last in the 2022 Environmental Performance Index released by the World Bank and is one of the world's poorest performing countries in terms of environmental hygiene. Out of the 180 countries evaluated, India is in the bottom five with a score of 18.9.

Even Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Vietnam have ranked better than India. The country is also inadequately performing various measures such as corruption control, the rule of law, and the effectiveness of the government.

The deterioration is enormous, with India ranked 168th out of 180 countries in EPI-2020. This time, Denmark has ranked number one in the sustainability, and environmental health categories.

EPI was first introduced in 2002 as an indicator of environmental sustainability in countries across the world. It was established as a global parameter in collaboration with the World Economic Forum and Columbia University.
