India plans to produce 1.2 billion tons of coal by 2023-24

News Synopsis

According to Union Minister of Coal Pralhad Joshi, India aims to expand coal production to 1.2 billion tonnes by 2023-24, and the government has taken a number of efforts to achieve this goal, including a revenue share mechanism, rolling auctions, and single window clearance. In a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha, Mr.Joshi said, "Coal India Limited (CIL) has envisaged a coal production programme of one Billion Tonne from CIL mines,"  He added that, Coal India Limited,, has taken a number of efforts to meet the goal of increasing coal production capacity. CIL has identified 15 mine developer/operator projects with a capacity of around 160 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum).Under the 'First Mile Connectivity' projects, CIL has taken steps to modernise the mechanisation coal transportation and loading infrastructure.Other strategies include expanding capacity through environmental clearance under clause 7(ii) of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) 2006.
