News Synopsis

India overtakes China as the world's most populated nation. India has surpassed China to become the world's most populated country, according to figures from the United Nations UN, with 142.86 crore people. The UN world population dashboard estimates that China has 142.57 crore people.

Since 1950, when the UN began collecting population figures, India's population has increased by more than one billion, according to the Pew Research Centre.

For the first time since 1960, fewer people lived in China in the last year. In response to concerns about overpopulation, Beijing abandoned its rigorous "one-child policy" in 2016 and began allowing couples to have three children starting in 2021.

As its workforce ages and birth rates decrease, China faces an impending demographic collapse.

worldwide population

By mid-2023, the UN estimates that there will be 8.045 billion people on the planet.

The trend of a growing population is also seen in Africa. By 2100, the population of the second-largest continent in the globe is predicted to increase from 1.4 to 3.9 billion people.

Over the previous ten years, the populations of eight countries with more than 10 million inhabitants, most of them in Europe, have decreased.

Due to its aging population, Japan will lose more than three million residents between 2011 and 2021.

The UN has predicted that after reaching a peak of 10.4 billion people, the population of the entire globe will only start to drop in the 2090s.

The following factors affect population growth:

Fertility rate: According to the United Nations, the trajectory of future fertility will have a significant impact on population increase.

Global fertility is anticipated to decline from 2.3 children per woman in 2021 to 2.1 in 2050, according to the World Population Prospects (2022).

Increasing longevity:

The average life expectancy has increased significantly in recent years, which is good news. Globally, 77.2 years is predicted to be the average life expectancy at birth by 2050, up from 72.8 years in 2019.

International migration:

Compared to births and deaths, international migration makes up a significantly lower portion of population change. However, migration has a major influence on population size in some nations and regions.

Ten nations will see a net outflow of over one million migrants between 2010 and 2021, while seventeen countries or regions will experience net inflows of over one million migrants.
