News Synopsis

According to a recent analysis by The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and Kantar, there are currently 692 million active internet users in the nation, and that number is expected to rise to 900 million by 2025, driven by development in rural areas.

As per a report naming the 'Internet in India', which is based on an ICUBE 2021 study, rural India continues to lead the way in terms of internet user growth, with 351 million users and a 37 percent penetration rate, while urban India appears to have reached a plateau with 341 million users and a 69 percent penetration rate.Goa and Bihar have the highest and lowest internet penetration rates, respectively, among the states. More Indians than the estimated 331 million people in the US participate in genuine online transactions like e-commerce and digital payments, at about 346 million. The global pandemic saw a record 51% increase in digital transactions from 230 million in India in 2019 in only two years.

In terms of gender distribution, male internet users outnumber female users in India, with about identical gender ratios across urban and rural users. According to user cases, the top three online activities in India are social networking, communication, and entertainment. Currently, 762 million Indians—63 percent of whom live in rural areas—have not yet accepted the internet. The paper emphasises that lack of understanding and the inability to understand the Internet remain major barriers, especially in rural India.
