News Synopsis

An official of a Tea Sxporters' Association said on Friday that because the Indian Tea Industry has a genuine chance of achieving the USD one billion export objective in the next two-three years, it is critical to seek the Centre's assistance in rationalising international MRL laws for the crop.

According to Anshuman Kanoria, Chairman of the Indian Tea Exporters' Association, it is also critical that the beverage produced for the international market complies with the safety regulations of importing countries. "This is essential to uphold the quality image of Indian tea in international markets and make our tea the preferred one worldwide," he said.

MRLs are defined as the maximum amount of pesticide residue that is anticipated to be found in food following the application of pesticides in accordance with acceptable agricultural practise. MRLs are primarily used to establish trading standards, but they also guarantee that residual levels do not constitute an unacceptable risk to consumers.

The Tea Board recently stated that the export aim must be increased by 50% by tapping new markets and filling the void left in the world market by crisis-hit Sri Lanka.
