News Synopsis

Reliance Jio added the most subscribers in May, 3.11 million, followed by Bharti Airtel, which added 1.02 million. Vodafone Idea continued to lose subscribers in May, losing 759,258 users. According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data, total wireless subscribers increased to 1,145.50 million in May, up from 1,142.66 million the previous month. Bharti Airtel continues to lead in terms of active subscribers with 97.98 percent, followed by Jio with 93.77 percent.

The percentage of active subscribers for Vodafone Idea was 85.14 percent. In terms of wireless broadband or 4G subscribers, Jio added 3.11 million, Bharti Airtel added 1.92 million, and Vodafone Idea added 1.18 million. Jio added 260,000 wireline broadband users while Bharti Airtel lost 110,000 users.

With 7.97 million requests in May, mobile number portability (MNP) remains popular. With strong 4G customer additions, it appears that the impact of tariff increases has faded. Telecom companies are expected to announce new tariff increases soon as they seek to increase their average revenue per user (Arpu) by weeding out low-paying, inactive subscribers. Despite the hikes implemented in December 2021, the industry's active subscriber base has increased in recent months.
