News Synopsis

Imports of Chinese products manufactured by forced labor in the Xinjiang Uyghur province are currently blocked after the US-sponsored Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act came into force on June 21. The law covers products that "occur in the northern part of the autonomous region of Xinjiang," China's leading manufacturing hub.

The Americans have introduced a law stating that the "autonomous region of Xinjiang Uygur has a mass camp where thousands of prisoners from a minority of Islam are being forced into labor and other abuses." The Chinese government denied the claim and warned the West not to enforce the law as it could disrupt business relations between the two countries.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) submitted to the US Parliament in the second week of June, a "strategy to prevent the import of goods mined, produced, or manufactured by forced labor in the People's Republic of China."

What will the new law determine? "UFLPA can refute that goods mined, produced, or manufactured in Xinjiang Uyghur or by an entity on the UFLPA Entity List are banned from importing into the United States under 19 U.S.C. SS1307.
