News Synopsis

Two non-executive directors of Huawei UK have resigned from the company's stance on the conflict in Ukraine. Sir Andrew Cahn and Sir Ken Olisa felt that the failure of the company to swiftly condemn Russia's invasion made their position untenable. Huawei UK thanked both men for their "invaluable guidance."

The news of the resignation comes when the USA warns Chinese companies of violating restrictions on technology exports to Russia. China has abstained from a UN resolution condemning Russia's invasion, but the government of China has recently expressed "regret" in its military operations, saying it is "extremely concerned" about the harm to civilians.

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has said that Washington will take "devastating" action against Chinese companies that oppose Russian sanctions and ban the use of US equipment and software needed to manufacture products.

The threat reflects the actions taken against Huawei in 2020, including the Donald Trump administration on an "entity list" that bans the acquisition of technology from US companies without government approval. The U.S. government said it believed that Huawei poses a national security threat at the time, but the company strongly denied it.
